High School Student Questionably Sent Home For Wearing Stretch P - FOX 29 News Philadelphia | WTXF-TV

Do you think she should have been sent home? Well... She was! Officials at Brandywine High School thought her fashion choice, was inappropriate for class. And that has the girl and her mother, feel the school took it too far. She's your average 17 year old girl, developing a sense of style. But she's not modeling these stretch pants and boots to show off her fashion sense, rather, to prove a point. Emily Schaeffer says she was sent home from Brandywine High School on Monday because of the outfit. "I was a lot offended because basically told that education is less important than what I'm wearing," said Emily Schaeffer. The school has not returned our request for a comment, but according to the district's website, students are allowed to wear stretch pants as long as they are covered by an article of clothing no more than four inches above the knee. Emily's mom, Jessica Kupferman says she feels her daughter met the criteria. "When she walked in I said what are you doing here? Why would they send you home for this," said her mother Jessica. When Emily went home she changed into these jeans, acceptable within the dress code but Emily says they're tighter and more revealing than the stretch pants. But the issue goes even deeper. Schaeffer says school administrators announced in an assembly that certain outfits are a "distraction," which makes teenagers like Emily feel uncomfortable. "He told us' that our bodies are a secret and they should be kept a secret,'" said Emily. "I can imagine being 14 and thinking "is my math teacher looking at me in those pants?" she said. The issue has sparked a lot of interest on social media. While her mother believes in enforcing the rules, she's siding with Emily this time, and hopes the school district changes it's overall approach. I don't want them to use the word distraction when it comes to the dress code at all. grand opening this weekend By Associated Press 10/10/2014 09:11 AM Craft beer has definitely found a home in Green Bay. This weekend the brewery that sort of got it all rolling, is unveiling its new Titletown Beerworks brewery and taproom. GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) Craft beer has definitely found a home in Green Bay. This weekend the brewery that sort of got it all rolling, is unveiling it's new Titletown Beerworks brewery and taproom. Titletown Brewing Company has been part of downtown Green Bay for 18 years. Now an expansion means they'll be here for many more. Inside an old warehouse in downtown Green Bay, Titletown Brewing Company is building a new future. "Little did we know it was right next door in the old Larsen cannery," said Brent Weycker, president of Titletown Brewing Company. This Saturday the company will celebrate the first phase in a $5 million expansion - as its new Titletown Beerworks brewery and taproom opens for business within the historic Broadway District. "This is about growing our business statewide," said Jim Kratowicz, Titletown's Chief Operating Officer."First time we'll bottle product and distribute throughout the state." The project which broke ground in March, allows Titletown to move its brewing operations to this old warehouse. "The demand for our product was there - frankly we're busting at the seam and can't brew enough beer,"said Kratowicz. Where it will up beer productionand start bottling its product for retail sales.. "One of these tanks can make more beer than our whole existing depot brewery," said one of the brewers. "We're only going to stay in Wisconsin - so the beer you grab off the shelf is fresh and one of the better beers you get can get terms of flavor," said Weycker. A project that creates a new destination downtown - sure to attract new visitors to the city. "It's basically an all-Wisconsin built brewery and we are really proud of that," Weycker said. A grand opening is planned for this Saturday from 5:30 pm until 10 pm. It's free and the public is invited. Copyright 2014 Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc. All rights reserved. MONEY: Tap into Jimmy John's | The Sierra Vista Herald

Tap Duong is banking on the old adage of athe nose knowsa as he brings the popular sandwich chain known for its afree smells,a Jimmy Johnas, toSierraVista. aFrom my college days, Iave loved Jimmy Johnas. It brings back that college nostalgia. Itas the most beloved college sandwich. This town needs another sandwich option,aDuongsaid. Duoung currently operates a wellness clinic in Sierra Vista. Services he offers include chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture and home fitness plans to strengthen the body, mindandspirit. But he fondly remembers his college undergrad days when he was pre-med at the University of Central Florida, when he, like most college undergrads, was in need for a convenient late night food option. The future Sierra Vista business owner found himself drawn intoJimmyJohnas. Currently, the Sierra Vista sandwich market is dominated by Subway, with three locations alone in town. Duong hopes to change that arithmetic and was inspired, ironically, to do so byeatingSubway. aI was eating at Subway actually,a Duong said. aI was thinking, aIf Jimmy Johnas ever came to town, I would probably never eat Subway ever again.a (The idea) kept brewing, aIf I ever have a chance to do it, Iam going todoit.a A dream of his since he was a child, Duong looks to franchise a Jimmy Johnas and take advantage of the transient make-up of Sierra Vistaas community where the sandwich shopas brand is familiar with those from the East Coast and Midwest. Jimmy Johnas is a mainstay at college campuses all across the country and Duong aims to harness the nostalgia Jimmy Johnas provokes to make his latest business ventureasuccess. Unlike opening a Subway location, franchising a Jimmy Johnas is not a cheap venture to participate in. It costs $35,000 in an initial franchise fee to even begin franchising a Jimmy Johnas compared to Subwayas $15,000 initial fee. After one factors the locationas rent, insurance, and locks on the doors, a franchisee is looking at anywhere from $330,500 to $519,500 in total costs to even get a Jimmy Johnas off the ground. Fortunately Duongas day job has him in the position that heas not breaking the bank with bringing quality sandwich delivery toCochiseCounty. aIam very grateful and very fortunate that business has been well enough that this practice has put me in a position to go: you know what, lets do it,aDuongsaid. Opening Sierra Vistaas first Jimmy Johnas is a sort of metaphorical as well as a tangible anchor for Duong into the community. His mother owns a nail salon in the mall and has lived in Sierra Vista intermittently since 2000, finally settling down to open his own practice in 2009. Now that his practice, Tap Into Wellness, is established in the community, Duong is sniffing around for hisnextchallenge. aThis Jimmy Johnas thing has been good for me,a Duong said. aWe all want to be challenged, we all get complacent, so it challenges me here. I love what i do here, but Iam still single, so letas do Jimmy Johnas because thatasmybaby.a Itas one thing to be a chiropractor in charge of a small practice that employs five people. Itas another when youare running a sandwich chain that looks to hire up to 30 people for its launch in February, however, the similarities of delivering a sandwich and plucking needles out a patientsa back are more alike than onewouldthink. aIam very good at organization,a Duong said. aOwning a franchise is a lot easier than owning a mom and pop restaurant because they have a lot of rules and regulations that you have to follow. Jimmy Johnas has their own protocol in place that you follow that makes it a lot easier, but you definitely need to know howtomulti-task.a Duong already has his next franchise in the works. He ahas every intentiona to open a second Jimmy Johnas in Sierra Vista and plans to open three to four more locations withinseventymiles. The next national franchise he looks to introduce intoSierraVista? aYou notice theres no drive-thru Starbucks, Iad love to be the first person to open the first free standing drive-thru Starbucks in town,aDuongsaid. Duongas business success has given the San Francisco native a reason to set roots into Cochise County. After leaving his old practice in Newport Beach to start his own in Sierra Vista, Duong has finally taken to Sierra Vista and by the looks of the business environment, Sierra Vista has takentoDuong. Duong has been advertising to residents for years to tap into wellness. With running his own practice and the impending launch of his first franchise, Duong is now able to tap into somethingforhimself. aIf you work for yourself, youare just happier,a Duong said. aYou make your own hours and do what you want to do. It makes life more fun when you can be yourownboss.a

CRAFT BEER CORNER: Four Medals For Beachwood Brewing - The Grunion Gazette Online - Gazettes.com Long Beach: Gazettes.com - News

Around 12 percent of Iowa voters say they remain undecided in recent polling. But Bystrom says that you kind of wonder if they are really undecided, or just dont want to tell the pollster who theyre voting for. I dont know of one undecided voter in the Braley-Ernst race. Not one, Bystrom says. Mrs. Obama visiting today and Mr. Romney flying in next week are darlings of their respective parties. Neither has the baggage of being in office, and despite her husbands spiraling approval ratings, Obama remains a popular figure. And with the race so tight, Braley and Ernst are willing to try anything. Star power has gone to bat for candidates in other key races as well, including a closely watched Senate race in Kentucky. There, Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes is trying to unseat Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell. Romney and former President Clinton both jumped into the competitive race last week, hoping to tip the scales in their partys favor. According to Bystrom, however, endorsements and star power only sway voters when theres a dearth of information about candidates. Thats not the case in the Hawkeye state, where ads flood the airwaves and contrasts between the candidates are generally clear.

Social Summit: Summit County breweries at Great American Beer Festival | SummitDaily.com

In the world of American manufacturing, it marked the end of an era. After all, these were the the consumer products that showcased the GE brand -- and even the American lifestyle -- to the world.Particularly during the post-war years, GE became the centerpiece of the Jetson's-style kitchen of the future, as depicted in a 1963 GE Appliance advertisement : A "modern" kitchen at GE's Appliance Park in 1963. GE sold its Appliances brand in September to a Swedish-based company. Source: General Electric By 2015, however, GE's century-old line of ovens, stovetops, and refrigerators will belong to the U.S. no more. But its not the only quintessential American brand to find a new home overseas. In fact, its close competitor Frigidaire (a former General Motors company) has been under the Electrolux umbrella for nearly two decades. And the list goes on across other industries. A Brazilian firm now controls fast food chain Burger King . The pork purveyor Smithfield Foods went to the Chinese . Below is a list of seven additional classic - and formerly American-owned - brands that you might not realize are controlled by foreigners. Why are so many marquee American brands being scooped up by wealthy investors abroad?

The dark horse rises: Could Yik Yak be the real winner among anonymity apps? - Yahoo Finance

Eichsteadt Beachwood CRAFT BEER CORNER: Four Medals For Beachwood Brewing By Sean Smith Craft Beer Columnist Grunion Gazette Newspapers Long Beachs own Beachwood Brewing traveled to Denver this past weekend for the Great American Beer Fest (GABF) and returned home with the prestigious Large Brewpub of the Year and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year awards, along with two medals for their beers. The four-day festival is the brewing industrys premier event, with thousands of visitors rubbing elbows with industry superstars, tasting beers from hundreds of breweries across America, and, in general, celebrating Americas brewing traditions. But for brewers, the highlight of the weekend is the GABFs beer competition. Here brewers compete in a variety of style categories for GABFs highly coveted and regarded gold, silver and bronze medals. This year, more than 230 medals were awarded to national beers. California brewers held their own, earning 48 medals. The crew at Beachwood Brewing took home gold in the Coffee Beer category for their Mocha Machine, a fantastic coffee porter that I find to be a perfect example of the style. Unfortunately this limited edition beer is hard to find, but hopefully the gold medal will convince them to brew it again. They also took silver in the French and Belgian-Style Saison category for Un Atout Saison, a dry, complex tart beer with a wonderful grassy/hay character and crisp refreshing carbonation and a peppery/fruity yeast finish.

Brew Moon Chairman Steve Palmer (from left), Jack Dadan representing The Legacy Guild, Sean Mahoney of Buckle Down Brewing, Rick Shanley representing the St. Cletus Father By Carmel DeAmicis 3 hours ago Content preferences Done While the tech community was frothing and fretting over the likes of Secret and to a lesser extent Whisper earlier this year, a dark cloud was brewing out east. Unbeknownst to most of Silicon Valley, a Georgia-based anonymity app called Yik Yakwas building a devoted following on college campuses, growing virally through word of mouth much like Facebook did. With that power came problems, akin towhat Whisper and Secret were dealing with, but with a healthyadded dose of adolescent angst, pranks, and cruelty. College attack and bomb threats .Rampant, nastygossip on high school campuses. Revenge porn sharing . The tech scene may not have been paying much attention, but as the adolescents of America got sucked into Yik Yaks addictive grasp, the rest of the country started to notice. The Today Show called it the new home of cyberbullying . How do you solve a problem like Yik Yak? asked The Washington Post . Even the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security had something to say about it , calling out Yik Yak on C-SPAN. This app is making a dent in national social consciousness, and those who are trying to understand where this anonymity app trend is going are scrambling to keep up with the havoc it wreaked in its wake. Its an impact thathas only grown since the summer school break, after college students returned home and told their network of old friends about Yik Yak. Its at1,000 universitiesnow.Unlike Secret, Yik Yaks adoption rate shows no sign of slowing. Take a look at App Annie ranking data of Secret, Whisper, and Yik Yak fromroughly the last year. While Secret declined in app store popularity, and Whisper stagnated , Yik Yak has only risen . Its now ahead of its two competitors in both overall app rankings and social networking app rankings. The college gossip product may be the dark horse that comes from behind and wins the anonymous app race. Yik Yaks US iOS app store popularity, according to App Annie, since its inception Whispers US iOS app store popularity, according to App Annie, for the last year Secrets US iOS app store popularity, according to App Annie, since its inception The Truman Show on a global scale For two first-time founders, both 23-year-olds fresh out of Georgia, BrooksBuffington and Tyler Droll are remarkably composed. They channel an inner Evan Spiegel vibe , as former fraternity memberswho seem unfazed by their products rise to prominence on college campuses. I wouldnt call them bros, exactly, but brogrammer wouldnt be too far off the mark. Theywere outvisiting the Valley recently, only their third trip so far, to shake hands and kissbabies. They told me theyre building Twitter for the nextgeneration. Although Id heard Yik Yak mentioned in passing, usually grouped in with Secret and Whisper, I hadnt actually explored the app. Buffington and Droll (their names sound like a novels preppy British detective duo) walked me through it. In their mind, theyre not competing with the anonymity app sector as much as with social media giants. Were taking business away from Twitter, Buffington tells me. College students dont use Whisper. Yik Yak hot feed near SOMA A user is greeted by a news feed that shows posts, but only posts sent within a 1.5 mile radius of your current location. It looks much like a Twitter feed, except geographically relevant. Its the sort of thing that wouldnt work at all without huge network effects. Apps like Popcorn have tried it if there isnt a critical mass of people onthe app near you, its useless. Thats where Yik Yaks execution has worked well. The founders took the Facebook approach, focusing entirely on spreading through colleges first. Its the perfect social media application for a campus environment, one that harnesses a dense network full of people with plenty of common interests. We always say location first, anonymity second, Droll tells me. Yik Yaks anonymity is more akin to reddits than toSecret or Whisper. Its not a confession tool as much as a wayto level the playing field, so the best content not popular kid wins.Users can upvote and downvote each others posts the most popular ones appear ranked top to bottom in the hot feed, whereas the news feed is chronological. The truly powerful feature, one that made me hope Yik Yak survives and expandsto the wider public, had nothing to do with anonymity, and everything to do with location. Its one the company hasnt publicly released yet. The founders demoed it for me: Its the ability to drop a pin on a map and peek into other Yik Yak feeds outside your current location. Featured Yik Yak options on a weekend At the moment, although your main feed only shows whatsin a 1.5 mile radius, if you want to lookinto other college campuses you can do so by choosing from a list (although you cant post to those areas). On the weekends events like football games are featured.

Iowa Senate candidates call in star power to swing tight race - Yahoo News

Amid the giant flags and banners waved by the hardcore supporters behind the goal on the club's concrete terraces, fans talk of belonging to a family and not to a brand. AFP visited the 85-year-old, 7,100-capacity ground as the team, known as "The Shots", took on local bitter rivals Woking in a fixture that is four divisions below the Premier League. The true fanatics chant their allegiance in the East Stand, a standing terrace for those who enjoy 90 minutes of jumping around and profane singing led by a battery of drummers going by exotic names such as "Rock'n'Roll Steve" and "Elvis". "Supporting Aldershot has never been about silverware," explained drummer Ben Blundell at half time. "I feel one with the club, I feel I'm wanted here, I'm part of the family." Shots head coach Andy Scott told AFP: "When it's a small attendance, everyone knows everyone else. "They drink in the same pubs and they stand in the same place and it becomes a gang that gets together and becomes one in their voices." - 'Hub of community' - Any tragedies in the tight-knit community are felt by all. When East Stand fanatic Steve Chapman, 33, a Gulf War veteran, committed suicide shortly after Christmas 2011, he was honoured at the club's next home game with a minute's silence. His former East Stand comrades sang a lengthy rendition of "There's only one Stevie Chapman," an honour usually reserved for star players. A touching tribute to Chapman can still be found in a small but well-tended memorial garden for fallen Shots located behind the main stand. Chapman was one of many soldiers in Aldershot, the home of the British army -- even the nearby corner shops are run by former Gurkhas, Nepalese-born British soldiers. As their shops struggle to survive in the age of giant supermarkets, local football clubs also face an existential threat from globalisation and the dominant glamour of the Premier League. Aldershot were only saved from going out of business last year when they were bought by a consortium headed by local businessman and philanthropist Shahid Azeem, who made his millions in computers. In total, seven leading non-league clubs have either entered administration or have been wound up over the last five years. However, as with the rise of pop-up shops, craft brewing and the resurgence of independent record shops, a new generation of football fans are discovering the rewards of localism. "You feel you're more connected to the players and the fans are much more loyal," explained 15-year-old Alfie Caudwell in the beer garden at The Crimea Inn. "There's a much better atmosphere, lots more chanting. I've been to Stamford Bridge and they don't sing much," he added, comparing the Recreation Ground to Chelsea's bastion. "I can have a chat with my favourite centre-forward out there, not a problem," added drummer Blundell. "You wouldn't even be able to shake Didier Drogba's hand," he said of the Ivorian star player for Chelsea. "Our support makes a big difference," said Martin Choularton. "The money we put in the turnstiles helps bring the players in," he said, referring to the gates at the stadium. "We are the hub of the community," chairman Azeem told AFP in a post-match interview on the sacred turf. - Tribal 'need for hatred' - Tribal unity is sharpened by well choreographed shows of hatred for whomever happens to be on their patch this week, but an especially hot reception is reserved for neighbouring clubs. So with sparks set to fly for the game of Woking and with police on edge, supporters are kept apart by a "no-man's land" inside the stadium. Uniformly dressed in the denim, designer shirts and pristine white trainers favoured by British football fans since the 1980s, the hardcore rivals trade inventive insults and abuse rival goalkeepers. "There's an inherent need to have rivals to focus hatred on," explained Geoff Pearson, an expert in football crowd behaviour. "It adds the value of what that club means to them." After a hard-fought defeat, it was an especially despondent set of fans that trudged out through the exit gates and under a banner imploring: "See you at the next game". For the fans, this is a matter of family duty and civic pride. For Aldershot Town, and hundreds of small clubs like it around the country, it is a matter of survival. Sports & Recreation
