White Flame Brewing Company in Hudsonville is now selling the 32 oz. cans of your favorite craft brews. The brewery, which opened in January 2012, hopes the addition of a crowler machine will take business to the next level. I think its a great thing that will attract people to come here, owner Bill White told FOX 17 News. Not only do we have great beer, we have a cool way for you to take it home too. White and White Flame Brewings head brewer Andy Steenbergen tout the many benefits of enjoying beer from a crowler. People dont realize it but sunlight, even if a beer just sits in the sun for a little while, even just on your car ride home, it can change the whole flavor of your beer, explained Steenbergen. Oxygen can affect beer very quickly and if you just seal it in there, it just affects it even fasterI think [a crowler] helps out the quality of the product a lot. Depending on the class of beer, the crowlers range between $7 to $9 dollars. Recommended usage is within 5-7 days but White said they are still looking into whether the crowlers preserve flavor past that. To learn about specials from White Flame Brewing Company, follow them on Facebook . You can also learn more by visiting the companys website here.

Supervisors delay decision on developer's request to demolish historic farmhouse at Villas of Newtown - The Advance - BucksLocalNews.com

About 70 hospital staff came in contact with Duncan in some capacity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "These protocols work," Obama said. "We know that because they've been used for decades around the world. If they're used properly, they work." He also said helping Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea deal with the outbreak is an investment in protecting people inside the U.S.The White House press secretary released a statement Wednesday that stated Obama had postponed his trips to New Jersey and Connecticut. The president will convene a meeting of Cabinet agencies to coordinate the government's response to "the Ebola outbreak," the secretary said. Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC, said Vinson should not have been flying on a commercial airline. CNN has since reported that Vinson notified the CDC of her symptoms and was cleared to fly. Frontier Airlines released a statement through the CDC; it said the plane "received a thorough cleaning per our normal procedures" after landing in Dallas that night. "Customer exhibited no symptoms or sign of illness while on flight 1143, according to the crew," according to Frontier's statement. "Frontier responded immediately upon notification from the CDC by removing the aircraft from service and is working closely with CDC to identify and contact customers who may traveled on flight 1143." ?Vinson and Nina Pham, 26, contracted Ebola caring forDuncan, the first man to be diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S. Duncan died Oct. 9. The hospital's chief clinical officer said he did not believe there was a "systematic institutional problem" following Vinson's diagnosis of the Ebola virus. We're looking at every element, our personal protective equipment and infection control inside the hospitals," Dr. Daniel Varga said Wednesday. "We don't have an answer for this right now, but we're looking at every possible angle around this." Varga joined city and county officials at a news conference hours after Vinson's diagnosis was confirmed. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said the healthcare professional lived alone and had no pets, and decontamination work had begun at her home. Rawlings also tried to calm people concerned about an outbreak. "We want to minimize rumors and maximize facts. We want to deal with facts, not fear," he said. "And I continue to believe that, while Dallas is anxious about this and with this news this morning, the anxiety level goes up a level, we are not fearful." Varga said the biggest challenge they had was the care of the two patients and "the ongoing screening of folks in the community." Our emergency department has continued to have folks come in," he said. "It's a tribute to the information that's been out there in the community about folks to be aware of this, symptomatology around Ebola, our (emergency department) has been handling folks through that very appropriately. I think the case of this patient here, tonight, again shows the ability to intake these folks, get them into isolation and manage them has been very effective." The first healthcare worker diagnosed with the disease in Dallas, Nina Pham, also provided care to Duncan. Pham, 26, fell ill on Friday. She is in stable condition, CNN reported, and has received a blood transfusion with blood from Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly. The hope is that antibodies from Brantly's blood will help Pham fight the infection. Brantly and nurse Nancy Writebol were successfully treated for Ebola at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, and no cases of Ebola have appeared as a result of their treatments. That success was not repeated in the case of Duncan, who was diagnosed with Ebola on Sept. 30 after contracting it while visiting Liberia. He developed symptoms about four days after leaving West Africa. This second reported infection comes amid allegations from a nurses' union that the hospital dealt with Duncan's Ebola case in a haphazard manner and pledges from the CDC to take a more active role against Ebola. Some nurses at the hospital claimed that Duncan was left in an open room in the emergency area of the hospital for hours and that nurses had inadequate gear to protect themselves against Duncan's bodily fluids. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says the second Ebola diagnosis is disappointing but not surprising. "Clearly, there was something that went on in that setting that did not totally protect those health care workers and that's something that has got to be changed, Dr. Fauci said. We have to protect our healthcare workers." National Nurses United, the largest U.S.

The nurse, identified as Amber Vinson, 29, will be treated at Emory University, where two other Americans previously diagnosed with Ebola while doing medical missionary work in Africa were successfully treated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Vinson flew from Cleveland to Dallas on Monday before being admitted to the hospital whereshe works, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, on Tuesday after she became ill. She reportedly did not have any symptoms at the time of her trip, and medical experts have unanimously said Ebola is not contagious until a person begins showing signs of the virus. While the process to transport Vinsonwas underway, the president encouraged more action from officials in U.S. President Barack Obama emphasized the importance of precaution and subsequently called for greater focus on fighting the outbreak overseas. "There is no standard short of optimal in protective equipment and hands-on-training that is acceptable," said RoseAnn DeMoro, executive director of National Nurses United , in a press release. "Nurses and other frontline hospital personnel must have the highest level of protective equipment, such as the Hazmat suits Emery University or the CDC themselves use while transporting patients and hands on training and drills for all RNs and other hospital personnel including the practice putting on and taking off the optimal equipment," DeMoro said. "The time to act is long overdue." Ashoka Mukpo, a NBC cameraman who was working in Liberia, was diagnosed with Ebola and is being treated at a hospital in Nebraska. Dr. Fauci says the NIH is fast-tracking an Ebola vaccine and the vaccine trial will include West Africans. Right now it's in the phase-one trial, Dr. Fauci said. It's going about as fast as any vaccine trial that I've ever been involved with over the last few decades. The West Africa Ebola outbreak is the largest in history, the CDC stated . Ebola has caused more than 4,000 deaths with more than 8,300 confirmed, probable and suspected cases in seven countries, the World Health Organization reported on Friday . Because of economic hard times, McGrath had submitted an amended final development plan to the supervisors asking for the change to the eight-year old agreement. It is that amended plan that the board is currently considering. On the other side of the argument are the preservationists who claim that the nearly two-century old historic structure should be saved, and the developer denied permission to amend the court settlement so that more townhouses could be built on the property. Its important for the board [of supervisors] to stand up for our zoning and stand up for our standards, implored former township supervisor Rob Ciervo, an advocate of adhering to Newtowns ordinances and preservation standards. Lets not tear down history, he declared. Representatives from homeowners associations of neighboring developments Wiltshire Walk and Kirkwood said that their residents are also against tearing down the farmhouse.

The hospital where Thomas Eric Duncan was treated for Ebola and later died, Texas Health Presbyterian, has come under scrutiny since twonurses who cared for him fell ill. Fauci said. We have to protect our healthcare workers." National Nurses United, the largest U.S. organization of nurses, questioned the nation's hospital preparedness in general with respect to Ebola on Tuesday. A UN healthcare worker died of Ebola in Germany, St. Georg Clinic in Leipzig announced Tuesday. He contracted the disease while working in West Africa. Copyright 2014 Raycom News Network. Updated: Wednesday, October 15 2014 1:32 PM EDT2014-10-15 17:32:01 GMT There is still much to learn about Ebola hemorrhagic fever, but the current outbreak has forced a spotlight on the often-fatal, dangerous virus that spreads through contact with body fluids of infected humans or animals. The few Americans who may have come in contact with the disease are encouraged to take protective measures.

(courtesy photo) View/Post Comments The YOUTHanasia Foundation , a nonprofit youth program, will soon give Landry-Walker High School students access to laptops donated by UnitedHealthcare as part of the company's effort to increase computer literacy and Internet access in underserved areas. Recipients were awarded computers through the community computer program. In the program, coordinators evaluate organization goals and allocate a specific number of laptops to meet the organization's needs. "These computers are former UnitedHealthcare computers that we have retired and refurbished," said April Golenor, president of the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana . "The computers are only about three years old and still have a lot of life in them so we want to direct them to organizations that support our community." YOUTHanasia will use the computers for its service-learning program that educates students how to give back to their communities. Students join the program as freshmen and continue through all four years of high school. "We train teens to use their talents to uplift the community," Executive Director Kimberly Dilosa said.

Houston-area happenings Oct. 15-22 The city of Easton has the Weyerbacher Brewing Company with its line-up of fine beers and its impressive output of 30,000 barrels a year. Bethlehem has its cherished Brew Works . But on volume alone, the crown has to go to Allentown, which is, conveniently, the Queen City of the Lehigh Valley. This is because the city has, attached to its hip, the borough of Upper Macungie, where there is a huge Samuel Adams brewery , employing hundreds and producing almost every kind of beer on the company's brew list. There's nothing else beer-related of that size anywhere nearby. (A tip of the hat, though, to Pennsylvania coal country's Yuengling , the oldest operating brewing company in the United Statessince 1829and at 2.5 million barrels annually, one of the largest breweries by volume in the country. Alas, it is outside the Lehigh Valley, 45 miles to Allentown's west, in Pottsville.) Article Continues Below For the past month or so, Deb and Jim Fallows and I have been reporting here for the American Futures project about Allentowns recent efforts at economic redevelopment. We were in Allentown for about six days in August. On our first afternoon in town, we encountered two small craft breweries Allentown Brew Works and the HiJinx Brewing Company that boost Allentown's claim to the Lehigh Valley brewing crown. Each of them is an important part of Allentown's contemporary beer story, which I'll explore below. But first, a brief word about Allentown's past brewing glory. This northeastern part of Pennsylvania was settled by German and Dutch immigrants, famous for their brewing prowess. The first brewery in Allentown was founded in 1845 by William Oberly. His brewery eventually morphed, under various owners, into the Lieberman Brewing Company, which lasted until 1915. Other great beer empires in the Allentown area were established by the Horlacher family and by Louis Neuweiler, who in 1900 bought out longtime local brewer Benedict Nuding and, 11 years later, built a large brewing complex at the corner of North Front Street and Liberty Street. The Neuweiler Brewery produced many kinds of beer there until 1968, when it finally ceased operations. View gallery . The abandoned Neuweiler Brewery, recently purchased by Ruckus Brewing Co. (John Tierney) Though long abandoned, the Neuweiler Brewery appears to have a future. Earlier this year, the Ruckus Brewing Company of Brooklyn, New York, finalized its purchase of the Neuweiler property, where it plans to rehabilitate the historic brewing complex in a two-stage $30-million development. Ruckus is primarily a contract brewer (that is, it makes beer for other companies that don't have their own brewing equipment), but it also has its own small line of beers. Estimates of the eventual production capacity at the 400,000 square-foot site range from 100,000 to 150,000 barrels a year. It's quite true that all of that is in Allentown's pie-in-the-sky future. It's true, as well, that Allentown has had its share of beer failures, such as the Old Lehigh Brewing Company, which lasted only a few years in the late 1990s. But even apart from the presence of Samuel Adams, the current beer-in-Allentown reality is strong, thanks to smaller craft brewers. Beer lovers in the Lehigh Valley owe a debt of gratitude to Peg and Dick Fegley, who decided in the 1990s to invest in their sons' craft-brewing interest . At a time when Bethlehem had been hit hard by the collapse of the Bethlehem steel works, the Fegleys in 1998 took over the abandoned Orr's department store at the corner of Main and Broad streets and established the Bethlehem Brew Works in that location. Locals credit the Fegleys' bold and risky move with marking the beginning of downtown Bethlehem's post-industrial turnaround. View gallery Fegley's Bethlehem Brew Works (John Tierney) Seven years later, the Fegleys decided to expand their operation to nearby Allentown. Also hard-hit economically over the years, Allentown's downtown had declined as well after the closing of Hess's department store and the loss of retail business to suburban sprawl-malls, as Jim Fallows describes here . The city center had become a warren of pawn shops, porn palaces, tattoo parlors, and the like. View gallery Fegley's Allentown Brew Works (James Fallows) But the Fegleys found a space they liked at 812 West Hamilton Streetthe historic Harold's Furniture building. It took them two years to refurbish the space, which opened in 2007 as Allentown Brew Works , a 400-seat restaurant and brew pub, that also has space for banquets and weddings. With its two locations, the Fegleys' brew works produce 6,000 barrels annually. And just as the Fegleys' Bethlehem operation helped spearhead that downtown's revival, their Allentown location was an early shot in the arm for its city-center redevelopment. There are other small craft brewing operations in the Lehigh Valley that are worthy of note, including Porter's Pub and Restaurant in Easton, and the Funk Brewing Company in Emmaus. View gallery . Chris Becker and Curt Keck of HiJinx Brewing (Tierney) But in Allentown these days, the buzz in the craft-beer community is all about HiJinx Brewing Company. In August, I went to their new brewery to interview the two guys who started HiJinxCurt Keck and Chris Becker. Here's what I found out. Curt Keck started homebrewing beer back in 1995 and quickly discovered a passion for beer and brewing. Over the next few years, he worked as a brewer at the Old Lehigh Brewing Company and at Weyerbacher Brewing Company before taking a job in IT to support his growing family. But he kept on brewing beer at home and in 2006 started entering his brews in competitions. (He would later win a Gold Medal at the Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing with a porter he perfected.) It was in 2007 that Keck met Chris Becker through the Lehigh Valley Homebrew Club. They discovered over the following years that they had complementary skills: Keck is a brewer, but also has a good head for business; Becker is mechanically inclinedgood with machinery, carpentry, etc. They eventually decided to join forces and launch a commercial brewery, getting their official registration in 2011 and their official license the following year. View gallery . HiJinx Brewing Company logo They were still brewing their beer in Kecks stand-alone garage in a residential area of South Whitehall Township, using a one-barrel brewing system and producing 52 barrels per year. Keck and Becker produced a variety of beers, including stouts, bitters, and blonde ales. Within months of starting, they were able to get six of their beers into Tavern on Liberty, an Allentown bar at 23rd and Liberty. At the 2012 Allentown Brewfest, a local craft-beer festival, Anthony Durante of the Allentown Economic Development Corporation met them, tasted their beers, and found out that they were making it out of a garage. He encouraged them to consider growing their company at the AEDCs Bridgeworks incubator . Keck and Becker realized that at Bridgeworks they would be able to have access to experienced business advisors and other economic-development aid, assistance with fit-out costs, and use of shared things like a forklift and conference room. They knew it was a great opportunity. View gallery . The fermentation tanks at HiJinxthe "cool side" of the brewing process (James Fallows) Late this past August, Keck and Becker were in the final stages of getting their operations set up. With their fancy new brewing equipment, they expect to be producing 1,000 barrels a year by the end of 2015. They've expanded their distribution to other local restaurants and bars such as Jack Callaghans Ale House and Strange Brew Tavern . Theyve been asked to create house beers for Grille 3501 as well as for The Hamilton Kitchen & Bar , a new establishment that opened in July across the street from Allentown's new PPL Center . Keck and Becker told me that theyre not interested in getting too big," but hope that their output will eventually be 2,500 barrels a year. They expect to have about ten to twenty employees by the time they move out of Bridgeworks, five to seven years from now. Pausing to reflect on that anticipated outcome, Keck said, People should know that craft beer is a big part of the economic growth of small cities. And we put out a product that people love. View gallery . Keck and Becker flanking their new brew kettle (John Tierney) The success of Allentown's efforts at revitalization won't be determined by its beer prowess. There are much more powerful activities going on there that will shape the city's future (see here and here , for example). But, just as beer was an important component of Allentown's past, it will also be important to its future. And, in the next installments in this series, we'll take a look at two other new craft-beverage enterprises that are part of Allentown's rejuvenationa meadery and a distillery. Stay tuned.

Green Flash Brewing Co. breaks ground in Virginia Beach | WTKR.com

breaks ground in VirginiaBeach Posted 12:05 pm, October 13, 2014, by Becca Mitchell Email San Diego-based Green Flash Brewing Co. broke ground in Virginia Beach on Monday for the companys first East Coast location. The site, on the corner of General Booth Boulevard and Corporate Landing, will be home to a 58,000 square foot brewery, tasking room and beer garden. The facility is expected to be completed in 2016. Mike and Lisa Hinkley, co-founders of Green Flash Brewing Co., along with Brewmaster Chuck Silva, Virginia State Senator Jeffrey McWaters, Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones and Virginia Beach Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr were present for the groundbreaking on Monday, October 13th. We couldnt be happier that Green Flash has chosen Virginia Beach as its East Coast location, said Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms. When they reach capacity, Green Flash will be producing 100,000 barrels of beer every year from Virginia Beach, and that is certainly something to celebrate. After announcing plans to build our facility in Virginia Beach, we have been moving forward step-by-step towards breaking ground, said Mike Hinkley co-founder and CEO of Green Flash Brewing Co. We are breaking ground to enter the first phase of construction, focused on the layout and building orientation on the nine-acre lot. We want to be sure we are mindful of our impact on the immediate surroundings, so we are planning to incorporate the pre-existing landscape and trees into our spacious beer garden and will develop routes for smart traffic flow, accessible walkways and ample parking for guests. We extend many thanks to everyone in the community for making us feel welcome and at home from day one and look forward to celebrating our opening upon completion of construction in 2016. The new brewery will replicate the state-of-the-art production capabilities of the Green Flash headquarters in San Diego. Green Flash predicts that when it opens, the Virginia Beach location will produce and ship more than 45 percent of their beer to the eastern half of the United States.
